Every fiddler ought to know an Irish set of tunes. After all, this music is a big part of the fabric of American fiddle tunes. In a traditional Irish jam session, you’ll hear “sets.” These are combinations of usually 2-3 tunes that are played as a medley. Often each tune will be played 3-4 through before the leader signals for the next tune. There is no pause between tunes.

I’m teaching you these tunes so that you can lead these at a jam. Here are 4-tips to be successful in leading:

• Memorize the tunes
• Set a playable tempo for you
• Make sure you can play the transition from one tune to the next
• Be sure to give a clear signal that the tune is changing. Give this signal during the last B part of the current tune. You can shout “last time,” on your final B part and then you change the tune.
