Description:

SWING IMPROV SERIES 2 2024: SONGS FOUND IN COUNTRY & JAZZ

Check out my listening playlist for this 3-month series!

April 2024

Song of the Wanderer by Neil Moret

Key: D/C
Dates: April 4, 18, 25

WORKOUT SKILLS INCLUDE:

  • Learn to play and sing the melody
  • Work out in increments: Level 2, Level 3, Level 4, Level 5
  • Western Swing & country double stops
  • Sound effortless in your improvs with easy voice leading tricks
  • Melodic embellishments
  • How to abandon the melody with taste and style

I learned this song earlier this year on a gig with rhythm guitar legend Tony Marcus. Since then, it’s become one of my absolute favorites! The progression is similar to so many other tunes, so everything you learn on Song of the Wanderer can be easily transferred to other tunes. An AABA song, the A parts have the class 1 17 to the 4 4 minor progression. And the B part is the rhythm changes bridge that you find in Kansas City Kitty, I’ve Got Rhythm, and so many other tunes.

On the country and jazz front, this has been covered by Asleep at the Wheel, Count Basie, Kay Starr, Kid Ory, Erskine Hawkins, and so many more greats!

May 2024

Cold, Cold Heart by Hank Williams

Key: C
Dates: May 9, 23, 30

WORKOUT SKILLS INCLUDE:

  • Learn to play and sing the melody
  • Work out in increments: Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Level 4, Level 5
  • Western Swing & country double stops
  • How to sound swing/jazz verse country/Western Swing
  • Licks from country steel artists and piano players — and yes, they’ll be translated to the fiddle!

Believe it or not, this is a two chord song! Written and made popular by Hank Williams, Cold, Cold Heart is as classic as they get.

On the country front it’s been covered by John Price, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Lucinda Williams, Patty Loveless, George Jones, Johnny Cash, and so many more. Jazz artists who’ve covered it include Louis Armstrong, Dinah Washington, Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, Bill Frissell, and Norah Jones.

August 2024

I’m an Old Cowhand

Key: C
Dates: August 1, 15, 29

WORKOUT SKILLS INCLUDE:

  • Learn to play and sing the melody
  • Work out in increments: Level 2, Level 3, Level 4, Level 5
  • How to sound melodic over the 2m 5 1 progression
  • Swing licks, Western Swing licks, and jazz licks
  • Solo with and without the melody
  • Swing bowing styles

The first version I heard of I’m an Old Cowhand was the Sons of the Pioneers. But did you know that the jazz saxophone player Sonny Rollins also recorded this on his record Way Out West? The chord progressions in this tune are based out of popular jazz standards, however the song itself – especially when you consider the lyrics – is as jazz cowboy as it gets.

This song has been covered by country artists such as: Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Asleep at the Wheel, Sons of the Pioneers, Patsy Montana, Charlie Daniels, and the Hot Club of Cowtown. On the jazz front, it’s been covered by: Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Dorsey, Sonny Rollins, Bing Crosby, Joshua Rodman, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Jazz Band.
